Title : “Escape from the Jungle”
Medium: Acrylic on stretched canvas
Dimensions: 81 x 101 cm
I created Escape from the Jungle during a period when I felt both overwhelmed and energised by the chaos of modern life. This piece is acrylic on stretched canvas, 81 x 101 cm, and it represents a visceral need to break free — not just from literal spaces, but from mental overgrowth and noise.
I approached the canvas with an emotional urgency, layering bold strokes of black, yellow, and green to mimic tangled vegetation and fractured light. Amid the density, I intentionally carved out passages of motion and direction — the red lines, for example, slash through the canvas like urgent escape routes or paths of instinct. There’s a figure-like form at the centre, part bird, part spirit, mid-flight — a symbol of transformation or perhaps a fragmented self trying to flee.
Despite the abstraction, I wanted viewers to feel a pulse — as if something living is pushing outward, reaching for clarity. The palette is both raw and luminous, echoing the beauty and suffocation of the jungle metaphor. It’s not just about nature — it’s about survival, freedom, and reclaiming space.
This work is as much a release as it is a question: What are we really escaping from?
Escape from the Jungle is not currently available for sale through the website. However, it will be exhibited at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln starting 20th July, and will be available for purchase during the exhibition.
